ASTM A588 Beam

Characteristics

ASTM A588 carbon steel beam exhibits high strength with good atmospheric corrosion resistance.  It weighs less than other grades of carbon steel, without a reduction in strength. A588 is a popular material for exterior applications due to its ability to “weather” and develop an orange-brown surface resistant to atmospheric corrosion when it is exposed to external environments.

Applications

A588 is used for structural beams for applications exposed to the outdoor environments.  These include:

  • Bridges
  • Buildings
  • Freight cars
  • Construction equipment
  • Transmission towers
  • Smoke stack liners
  • Precipitators
  • Heat exchangers
  • Light standards
