Stainless steel is a modern alloy developed in the early 1900’s after metallurgists discovered that chromium-iron alloys displayed superior corrosion resistance to carbon steel alloys. The first products using stainless steel were produced in 1908 and the first patents were granted in 1912. Stainless steel, which combines the high strength, hardness, workability and formability of steel with high corrosion resistance and smooth surface finish, is one of the most popular steel alloys and is used in applications throughout industry. It is a low cost material and is 100% recoverable and recyclable.

The corrosion resistance that is unique to stainless steel is the result of a transparent passive film of chromium oxide forms on the surface of the steel and protects it from oxidation. Higher chromium levels increase the corrosion resistance of the steel, but it creases the brittleness of the metal, making it hard to work with. There are three main categories of stainless steel, based on their crystalline structure:

Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel is the most widely used stainless alloy group. The austenitic alloy contains a minimum of 16% chromium. Its properties include:

  • Good to excellent corrosion resistance
  • Can be work-hardened
  • Easily machined and fabricated to tight tolerances
  • Smooth surface finish that can be easily cleaned and sterilized
  • Temperature resistance from cryogenic to high heat temperatures

Austenitic alloys are the 200 and 300 series of stainless steel. The most common austentic stainless steel alloys are 304 and 316/316L. Type 201 is a general purpose stainless alloy. 304 and 316/316L are commonly used for sanitary applications.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

Ferritic stainless steel alloys exhibit lower corrosion resistance than austenitic alloys due to a lower chromium content. These alloys contain between 10.5% and 27% chromium. Their properties include:

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • High strength and toughness
  • Cannot be work-hardened
  • High machinability and workability to tight tolerances
  • Smooth surface finish

Some of the 400 series of stainless steel are ferritic alloys, including 409, 410s, 430 and 444.

Martensitic Stainless Steel

Martensitic stainless steel alloys contain lower amounts of chromium (between 12-14%) and are less corrosion resistant than austenitic and ferritic alloys.  Their properties include:

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Extreme strength and toughness
  • Can be work-hardened
  • High machinability and workability to tight tolerances
  • Smooth surface finish

400 series alloys, including 410, 420 and 440 are martensitic stainless steel alloys.

Sheet Finishes

Stainless steel sheet is available in multiple finishes.

  • No. 1 Finish - Hot-rolled, annealed and descaled
  • No. 2D Finish - Hot-rolled, annealed and descaled
  • No. 2B Finish - Cold-rolled, bright finish
  • Bright Annealed Finish – A bright cold-rolled finish retained by final annealing in a controlled atmosphere furnace
  • No. 3 Finish – Intermediate polished finish, usually 120 grit, one or both sides
  • No. 4 Finish- General purpose polished finish, usually 180 grit, one or both sides
  • No. 6 Finish- Dull satin finish, Tampico brushed, one or both sides
  • No. 7 Finish- High luster finish or near mirror (has some lines)
  • No. 8 Finish- Mirror finish
